My Journey as an Intern at QLO

When I first stepped through the doors at QLO on April 1st, I’ll admit I didn’t entirely know what to expect. On paper, my mission was clear: manage and expand the library, host events, catalogue books, and refine the existing system. In theory, it sounded straightforward. In reality? I had no idea how I was actually going to get there. Looking back now, it has been a journey that felt simultaneously long and short, packed with new experiences, steep learning curves, and unforgettable moments. Here is what that evolution looked like from the inside.

Learning the Art of Execution

One of my biggest takeaways from this internship was learning how to bridge the gap between a high-level goal and an actual, tangible outcome. I learned to plan, delegate, and break down large tasks into research questions, gather data, and convert that data into action.

My first major test was to write down and categorise every single book currently in the library. Once the foundation was laid, the fun began:

  • The Book Donation Drive: I planned a drive that successfully added 22 new books to our shelves.
  • The Icebreaker Get-Together: A casual event where guests picked questions from a jar, breaking the ice and sparking genuine connection.
  • The Book Reading: We hosted a reading event where the author shared unique travel and cab stories, bringing wonderful energy to the space.
  • The Short Story Reading: What started as a simple reading beautifully morphed into a deep, meaningful discussion about office politics and work culture.

Beyond the library, I also got my hands dirty helping with QLO’s supper clubs: handling everything from setup and event photography for our socials to assisting with the food. It taught me that the little details are what turn a standard event into a truly memorable experience for guests.

Skills Beyond the Screen

Before starting, I figured I’d learn how to design posters and create newsletters. I did do that, but the real education happened offline.

By sitting in on meetings and team discussions, I got a front-row seat to how strategic planning actually works. I saw firsthand how diverse people from different agencies collaborate to build something lasting and impactful. I learned how to talk to people, engage a room, and tailor marketing to entirely different target groups.

A Different Side of the Corporate World

Working at QLO completely opened my eyes. Starting my career journey in a non-profit organisation showed me a side of the professional world where the bottom line isn’t just about making money, it’s about making a difference.

The absolute bonus of my time here was listening to the stories of people who visited the school. Getting to actively see the tangible difference being made in the education system was incredibly inspiring.

The Next Chapter

I still have a long way to go and a lot more to learn, but this experience has given me a rock-solid foundation to push off from.

I am incredibly grateful not only for the professional growth this environment provided me, but for the people who made every single day unique, fulfilling, and full of life. Thank you, QLO!
